Miss Rhode Island 2016 Shruti Nagarajan graduated from Brown University in 2014 with a B.A. in Public Policy and Education History. Although Shruti is originally from the island of Guam, Shruti has found her home in Rhode Island. Shruti is passionate about equal access to quality education for all students. Shruti’s previous volunteer work with students inspired her platform "Upward Mobility: College Access for Low-Income and Minority Students”.
Shruti was awarded the first-ever “Women in Business” scholarship award at the Miss America 2017 competition in Atlantic City, New Jersey this past September. Shruti is proud to be the first Miss Rhode Island of Indian heritage. She performed a Bollywood Fusion Dance at the Miss America competition to showcase her love for dance and her culture.
After working for two years in the financial services sector, Shruti decided to pursue her platform work as a full-time job. She currently serves as an AmeriCorps member and Citizen Schools Teaching Fellow at the Clarence R. Edwards Middle School in Charlestown, MA. Focused on helping low income and minority students matriculate into college, Shruti is currently working with 25 high-achieving students in the Clarence R. Edwards Middle School 8th Grade Academy, a program focused on helping students apply to college preparatory high schools and exposing students to the benefits of a college degree.
Shruti currently attends Salve Regina University as a part-time student in the Certificate of Graduate Studies in Social Entrepreneurship Program. Shruti is attending on a full tuition scholarship, which is generously provided by Salve Regina University to the winner of the Miss Rhode Island Scholarship Program competition. Shruti's scholastic ambition is to eventually receive an MBA.
